Garbage Disposal Repair

A disposal that hums without turning, trips off on its own or drips into the cabinet below is usually a short repair. Sometimes it is the drain behind it that is at fault, so ask the plumber to check the unit and the line it empties into before talking about a new one.

Signs That Need Attention

  • A hum with no grinding when the switch is flipped
  • Nothing at all from the switch, and the unit will not restart
  • Water dripping from the sink flange, the side inlet or the discharge pipe
  • A hard rattle that means something went in with the food waste
  • Both sides of the sink filling as soon as the disposal runs
  • A smell that returns within a day of cleaning the sink

Most disposal failures come down to three things: something hard in the chamber, a motor that has reached the end of its life, or a gasket that has dried out. Hard water around Austin does not help, since scale and grease build a crust in the grinding chamber and in the short length of pipe after it. Older condo and apartment kitchens add a further wrinkle, because the disposal empties into a shared branch and a blockage downstream shows up at the sink that is used most.

What the Service Includes

Small job, real hazard. Never put a hand into the chamber, and never rely on the wall switch being off as protection.

Clearing a jam safely

Power comes off at the breaker or the plug under the sink first. The flywheel is freed from below, the obstruction is taken out and the reset button is used only once the chamber is clear.

Leaks at the flange and discharge

A drip is traced to its actual source: the seal where the unit meets the sink, the mounting ring, the discharge gasket, the dishwasher inlet or the trap under it. Each of those is a different fix.

Repair, or a new unit

A jam, a seal or a cord is worth repairing. A seized motor, a body that has rusted through or a unit that trips the reset every week is not, and the sizing and wiring for a replacement are checked before it is quoted.

Your Repair Options

What goes down the sink decides how often you make this call. Grease and cooking oil harden in the branch line as they cool, fibrous peels and celery strings wrap around the grinding plate, coffee grounds settle into a paste, and rice and pasta swell after they are through the unit. Run cold water while it is grinding and for a while afterward, feed waste in gradually rather than all at once, and keep the disposal for scraps rather than treating it as a bin.

If the sink still drains slowly with the disposal disconnected, the unit was never the problem. In a rental or a condo, check who is allowed to authorize the work and whether the building has its own isolation valve before a plumber is booked, because that alone can delay a straightforward repair.

A line that keeps blocking after the unit is cleared is covered by drain cleaning, and repeat backups across several fixtures point to sewer line repair. Leaks from the tap or the shut-off valve beside it belong under toilet and faucet repair. Newer kitchens south of the city are covered on the Buda plumbing page, or describe what the sink is doing and the right visit can be planned.

Garbage Disposal Questions

Why does my garbage disposal hum but not turn?

The motor is getting power but the grinding plate is stuck, usually on a bone, a fruit pit, a piece of cutlery or a bottle cap. Turn the switch off and leave it off, because running it while jammed is what burns the motor out. Shut the power off at the breaker or unplug the unit, then call Austin Emergency Plumbing Pros rather than reaching into the chamber.

What does the red reset button under the disposal do?

It is an overload cutout that trips when the motor draws too much current, usually because of a jam. Pressing it after the obstruction is out will often bring the unit back. Pressing it repeatedly while the jam is still there will not, and a disposal that trips every few days is telling you the motor is on its way out.

Is it worth repairing a disposal or replacing it?

Jams, seals, a loose mounting ring and a damaged cord are all worth repairing. A seized motor, a leaking body or constant tripping generally is not, and at that point the price of the parts and labor approaches a new unit. The same reasoning applies to bigger equipment, which is set out in repair versus replacement.

Can a garbage disposal cause the sink to back up?

It can contribute, but a full backup is more often the pipe beyond it. Fine ground waste mixed with grease coats the branch line and narrows it over the years, so the disposal is the last thing to get blamed and the first thing to be replaced unnecessarily. Water rising in both bowls or in a nearby fixture points past the unit. See clogged drain or sewer line for how to tell the two apart.
